Choose woven for detailed logos, leather for a rugged or vintage look, PVC for hats that see water and sweat, and rubber for a raised, soft-touch finish. We offer all four on the Richardson 112 and other popular hats, and we’ll tell you which suits your logo before you order.
The four patch types side by side
| Patch | Look and feel | Detail | Often used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | Natural, rugged, classic | Best with clean, simple marks | Workwear, outdoor and vintage-style brands |
| Woven | Flat and smooth, thin threads woven tight | Holds the most detail | Logos with small text or fine lines |
| PVC | Molded, flexible, solid color | Bold shapes and clear color areas | Outdoor crews, athletic hats |
| Rubber | Raised, 3D, soft feel | Bold shapes | Streetwear and athletic brands |
Leather patches
Leather gives a hat a natural, worn-in look that fits trades, outdoor brands and anything with a vintage feel. It pairs especially well with a structured trucker like the Richardson 112. Clean, simple logos read best on leather.
Woven patches
Woven patches use thin threads packed tight, so small lettering and fine lines stay sharp. If your logo is too detailed to stitch straight onto a hat, a woven patch is usually the first thing we suggest. If it’s still too fine at hat size, we’ll show you a simplified version before anything is made.
PVC patches
PVC is molded and flexible with solid areas of color. It doesn’t soak up water, which makes it a good choice for hats that get sweaty, rained on or worn outdoors all day.
Rubber patches
Rubber patches stand up off the hat with a soft feel, which is why they show up so often on streetwear and athletic caps. Bold shapes and thick letters suit them best.
Still deciding between a patch and embroidery?
If your logo is bold and simple, stitching it straight into the hat may be the cleaner choice. Our posts on embroidered vs patch hats and 3D puff embroidery cover those options.

A few questions we get
Which patch is best for workwear?
Leather or PVC. Leather has the classic look, and PVC holds up on hats that see sweat and weather.
Which patch holds the most detail?
Woven. The thin threads keep small text and fine lines readable.
Can I put a patch on a Richardson 112?
Yes. The Richardson 112 is available, and it’s a classic base for a leather patch.
